CalAmp's recent pullback could be a buying opportunity for long-term investors, Credit: CalAmp

CalAmp Corp. (NASDAQ: CAMP  ) released its fiscal first quarter 2015 earnings today and shares fell by as much as 16% in after-hours trading. However, unlike last quarter's across-the-board miss, this time CalAmp's results actually came in ahead of Wall Street's expectations.

Specifically, quarterly revenue rose 10% year over year to $59 million, just edging past the $58 million analysts had expected. That performance was led by a 17% increase in wireless datacom sales to $47.8 million, which easily offset a 14% drop in Satellite revenue to $11.1 million. Meanwhile, CalAmp's adjusted net income grew 23% over the same period to $6.9 million, or $0.19 per share, also beating estimates for earnings just $0.18 per share.

Also of note is that CalAmp's results were well within its previously guided ranges, which called for fiscal Q1 revenue of $56 million to $60 million, and adjusted net income per share of $0.17 to $0.21. That's all well and good, but at least one analyst chimed in ahead of today's report, effectively inflating expectations with the assertion that guidance was likely conservative.

You can use simpler screen -- a checklist of just a few traits that are universally good markers of an appealing long-term holding. Here are three key traits that will key you in to a good investment, regardless of the company's sector, whether it's considered a growth or value stock, or even whether it's a market favorite or a pariah. 1. A brand that's synonymous with the product Technology companies largely rely on human capital for their ongoing competitiveness. Needless to say, people are highly unpredictable assets that can, and do, change quickly. So, products with an Apple logo will only stay popular so long as the mechanics and technology created by its people are cutting-edge. In other words, it's the talent that made Apple (AAPL) what it is today. And in order to remain great, Apple needs to retain its best people and be better than its competitors in acquiring the top minds in its industry. That's why, despite the company's incredible growth and ability to shape the future of multiple industries, Apple will never be as sound an investment as, say, Coca-Cola (KO). Sure, Coca-Cola has an amazing manufacturing and distribution system, along with a super-secret formula to make its signature soft drink. But its true beauty as a company, a brand, and an investment, is that it has taken the simplest of ingredients and through brilliant branding turned its core product into one of the biggest, most recognizable brand names in the world (actually, the third biggest, according to Interbrand's 2013

If you're only a headline skimmer, it's a detail that would have been easy to overlook. For those who don't miss anything, however, they'll already know that beverage company Konared Corp. (OTCBB:KRED) is about to unveil a product that will put it toe-to-toe with the likes of The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) and PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE:PEP). And, if history is any indication, while PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are apt to maintain their wider distribution, KonaRed is apt to beat them in enough places to carve out a nice piece of the market, and reward KRED shareholders in the process. Meanwhile, there's a good chance that most PEP and KO shareholders know - or even care - that the company they own a stake in is even competing in this arena. That arena? Coconut water.
