Consider: Shares of airline stocks like United Continental, Delta Air Lines (DAL) and American Airlines (AAL) have been buffeted by three issues recently. They’ve seen oil prices rise, Lufthansa cut its forecast, and what is now viewed as a disappointing May revenue report. And United Continental has the most exposure to all three themes. The company has long-term contracts to fly its fleet of more than 500 50-seat jets for various partners -- particularly Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL  ) and United Continental (NYSE: UAL  ) -- but once those contracts end, nobody will want these fuel-guzzling aircraft.

Top 5 Financial Stocks To Buy For 2014

eople are beginning to lose confidence in Abenomics, intones the Financial TimesLong View Columnist John Authers, introducing his interviewee, Charles Dumas, chief economist at Lombard Street Research in a provocative FT video posted on June 17.

Dumas argues that Abenomicsdevaluation strategy has severely suppressed real wages, hurting consumers and thereby suppressing growth, even as it has boosted stock prices by inordinately boosting corporate profits, without, however, motivating Japanese corporations to invest or distribute profits to shareholders.

Dumas asserts that the Bank of Japan blow-out monetary stimulus, that is, the 10% plus of GDP bond- and other financial asset-buying QE program being pursued under Abe minion, BOJ governor Kuroda Haruhiko, will not be effective in achieving structural change (as it has proven not to be in other places, like Germany).

Notwithstanding this prospect, Dumas believes that Abenomics means further devaluation as BOJ strives toward its 2% inflation goal, which will weaken Japan more and set the stage for a possible (probable?) financial crisis.

An auto insurance company I really like is Berkshire Hathaway Inc.'s (NYSE: BRK.B) Geico subsidiary.

We've all seen the ads with the talking gecko, and whether you love the ads or hate them, you all know the company's motto about 15 minutes and 15% savings. What a lot of people don't know is that Geico is one of billionaire-investor Warren Buffett's main sources of investable cash.

  • [By John Emerson]

Buffett is sometimes accused of holding investments and businesses too long. Sometimes the criticism is warranted, although the tax implications of selling such high cash-generating businesses frequently overrides the status of their growth. Certainly the lack of growth in See's Candy would seem to warrant a sale at some point if the offering price was sufficient. It seems that Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B) is no longer interested in growing the sales of the legendary confectioner. Many believe that See's could be developed in national rather than a regional brand if their management so desired.

Banks like First Merit (FMER) and First Merchants (FRME) have done deals in the past year and are open to doing more to increase their market share and footprints. This should be the year the floodgates open and we see the first wave of merger activity in small banks.

Spruce Point Capital Management, LLC has released a research report about small cap robotics stock iRobot Corporation (NASDAQ: IRBT) entitled "About to Short Circuit," meaning investors should take a closer look at the report, the stock and the performance of robotics peer Adept Technology Inc (NASDAQ: ADEP) and the Robo-Stox Global Robotics & Automation ETF (NASDAQ: ROBO). I should mention that we used to have both Adept Technology and iRobot Corporation in our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio because we see the robotics subsector improving as companies aim to reduce overhead and improve efficiencies through machine to machine (M2M) automation.

Another way for investors to play the robotics industry is a new exchange traded fund, Rob! o-Stox Robotics & Automation (symbol: ROBO). The ETF owns a basket of robotics and automation stocks. One major caution, though, is that not all the stocks in the ETF are those investors traditionally think of when it comes to robotics. The largest weighting is in 3D Systems, a maker of a 3D printer, and Faro Technologies, which makes measurement devices. But none of the stocks in the ETF account for more than 4% of the total value, so the diversification helps give investors a way to play the speculative industry.

Oil services company Petrofac looked cheap last month, when you could buy it for around 拢15. Today, you would pay just 拢13.40. Is this a great time to buy?

Petrofac's share price is now down a meaty 20% over the last three months, despite signing a couple of lucrative contracts in April. Last week, it announced it had won the lion's share of a $3.7 billion deal to develop oil fields for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. That followed a $500 million contract from the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company. My suspicions that Petrofac is being unfairly punished by a wider market sell-off were confirmed by its recent full-year results, which revealed a 17% rise in profits, neatly matched with a 17% dividend hike.

Gaining ETF exposure...without breaking the piggybank
So what's the best choice? A traditional ETF or one that's value creating? That depends. First, determine your need for market exposure. For example, if you're lacking international investments, go with an ETF that'll get you that type of exposure. Next, decide whether or not you're willing to pay a higher cost for the chance to outperform. If you're inclined to fork over extra dough for that potential, then consider a value-creating type of ETF. For example, Invesco's (NYSE: IVZ  ) PowerShares ETFs seek to beat traditional benchmark indexes while giving investors access to more focused investment opportunities. Instead, if you want to keep costs to a minimum, then look for a traditional ETF with a low expense ratio.

AcelRx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Redwood, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One stock that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is AcelRx Pharmaceuticals (ACRX), which is involved in the development and commercialization of therapies for the treatment of acute and breakthrough pain. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up big by 150%.

If you take a look at the chart for AcelRx Pharmaceuticals, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending modestly for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $8.94 to its recent high of $11.52 a share. During that uptrend, shares of ACRX have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of ACRX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ACRX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $11.36 to $11.52 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 635,439 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ACRX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $12.50 to its all-time high at $13.50 a share. Any high-volume move above $13.50 will then give ACRX a chance to tag $15 a share.

Traders can look to buy ACRX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $10.35 to $10 a share. One can also buy ACRX off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Joshi Madhavi]

The company gets its revenues from two types of fees: management fees which are linked to the assets under management (AUM) and performance fees which can be quite volatile. Over the last five years AUM have increased by around 4% per annum from the low at the end of 2008. However, revenues have decreased by around 7% per annum. Performance fees have held up okay since 2008, but management fees have taken a big hit. Since revenues are dependent on the average AUM over the whole year, let look at revenues from 2009 they have grown by around 6.5% per annum in this case. Institutional clients are more sticky and stable compared to retail, but the company has not managed to increase AUM from this source substantially over the last five years.

For the calendar year-to-date, the Fund Investor Class returned +2.9% compared to +8.3% for the S&P 500 and +7.0% for the Russell 3000. DIRECTV (DTV) (+25% on AT&T buyout offer), Martin Marietta Materials (MLM) (+30% on its acquisition of Texas Industries) and Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX) (+12%, and in the news for its hostile takeover battle for Allergan) benefited from the robust deal environment in different ways. Interval Leisure (IILG) (-37%) was the largest detractor and one of our few companies where business value declined. Our earnings estimates fell roughly 15% when Interval announced that four large, multi-year corporate relationships renewed at less favorable rates in their timeshare exchange business. We think the stock has overreacted to this news, and the company continues to add strategically to its platform. Other small-cap stocks that detracted from year-to-date results included XO Group (XOXO) (-25%) and Redwood Trust (RWT) (-11%). Broader themes behind the relative shortfall include our overweight position in consumer discretionary companies (the weakest sector in the market year-to-date), our lack of near-term big winners in health care and technology (the strongest sectors in the market year-to-date) and our conservative portfolio positioning in the first half of the year. We are not pleased with recent results. It is natural for our concentrated investing style to be out of step with the market at times.
