Top 5 Industrial Conglomerate Companies For 2014

Getty Images Would your financial worries be solved if you just had more money -- say, $1 million? Maybe. But according to a recent study by the folks at UBS (UBS), even millionaires -- multimillionaires, in fact -- fret over things like making ends meet and having enough to achieve their life goals. The news from Wealthville is rather surprising. Researchers found that only 31 percent of millionaires consider themselves wealthy. Even among those with $5 million or more, only 64 percent of them are confident that they'll meet their own goals. For anyone having a hard time making ends meet on their income -- no matter whether you're in the middle class or the upper class (or extreme upper, upper class) -- there are ways that you can improve your financial condition. Don't Let Your Cash Sit Around and Languish Whether you have $5,000 or $5 million in the bank, it's important to think sensibly about your cash. It makes sense to keep some of your assets in cash, especially in the form of an emergency fund. But according to the UBS study, at least 47 percent of those surveyed say that "It's important to me to have cash because that's money I know I am extremely unlikely to lose." Whoa, back up. That's dangerous thinking that shows these folks haven't considered the effect of inflation. While the conventional way to think of inflation is as an increase in prices over time, the smarter way to think about it is that inflation is the erosion of your purchasing power over time -- historically, about 3 percent annually. Here's what that means: If you sock away $1,000 for 20 years during which inflation averages 3 percent, it will end up only able to buy you $554 worth of things (in today's dollars). To have $1,000 worth of buying power in 20 years, you'll need to sock away about $1,800. (Play around with different scenarios with this inflation calculator.) So while nearly half of those surveyed see cash as a risk reducer (that preserves their wealth), they're actually exposing their money to even more risk (shrinking over time). The lesson for all is this: Don't keep much more than you need to in cash. Instead, seek out long-term wealth-growing assets. Smart Saving/Spending Strategies for All Walks of Life

This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

Michael Sohn/APSprint CEO Dan Hesse Sprint has been ranked last among U.S. cellphone service operators in a customer satisfaction survey by the influential Consumer Reports organization, scoring dismal marks for measures ranging from voice to 4G reliability. No-frills carrier Consumer Cellular received the highest overall score of 88 out of 100, followed by U.S. Cellular (USM) with 75. Sprint received the lowest score of 59, faring the worst in terms of value, voice, text and 4G services. The annual ratings were based on a September survey of 58,399 cellphone service subscribers by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, which publishes widely followed surveys and reviews of everything from cars to refrigerators. In last year's survey, Sprint (S) trailed only Verizon Wireless among the four major carriers. Verizon Wireless (VZ) (VOD) ranked highest again this year with a score of 71. T-Mobile US (TMUS) rated 65 and AT&T (T) 64, according to survey results released Thursday. The rankings are based on ratings for voice, text and 4G, taking into account the occurrence of problems and adjusted for frequency of use. Sprint has been revamping its network after years of customer losses. The company, which is 80 percent owned by SoftBank, warned in October that customer defections would remain high in coming quarters. The company reported a decline in third-quarter revenue as it lost more subscribers than expected following the shutdown of its older network. "Our latest cell service satisfaction survey revealed a somewhat precipitous decline by Sprint that shuffled the rankings of the major standard service providers," Glenn Derene, Electronics Content Development Team Leader for Consumer Reports, said in a statement.

West Marine (Nasdaq: WMAR) is an undervalued retailer.  The company is going through a change in focus from a bricks and mortar boat product retailer to a fully integrated retail and wholesale business through bricks and clicks, targeting the boating and water enthusiast customer.   Recent results have been affected by a severe rainy and cool spring which hurt boat usage and delayed the start of the season.  The company has accelerated cash investments to build larger more productive stores and expand its ecommerce abilities, consequently affecting free cash flow short term.  The stock lacks sponsorship as there is only one research report written on the company by a small boutique firm.  The stock trades at only book value despite the company being the leading industry player with a solid balance sheet and significant net cash position.

Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.

Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.

But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):

[Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC comps were stronger than[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.

Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

Margins matter. The more Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Vitacost.com's competitive position could be.
