Hot Life Sciences Companies To Buy For 2014

Given that you clicked on this article, it seems safe to assume you either own stock in SVB Financial (NASDAQ: SIVB  ) or are considering buying shares in the near future. If so, then you've come to the right place. The table below reveals the nine most critical numbers that investors need to know about SVB Financial stock before deciding whether to buy, sell, or hold it.

SVB Financial is not your typical bank. Located in Northern California, it's the holding company for Silicon Valley Bank, a niche lender that focuses almost exclusively on companies in the technology, life sciences, and winery space. Think venture capital. "For nearly three decades," its website reads, "SVB Financial Group and its subsidiaries, including Silicon Valley Bank, have been dedicated to helping entrepreneurs succeed." And if its share-price performance is any indication, this model has succeeded. Over the past 10 years, the total return to shareholders has been 273%. For context, only a handful of banks exceeded the 100% mark over this same time period -- including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, and PNC Financial -- and roughly half of the 100-plus banks I examined actually declined in value over the same time period.

The market for Vonage's services, particularly VoIP, is highly competitive, with MagicJack VocalTec (NASDAQ: CALL  ) also working to drive prices down in the consumer market. Vonage has a few tricks up its sleeve, such as free video calls to in-network subscribers, but given the rather small Vonage user base, this may not be enough to encourage growth. However, Vonage may not need gimmicks to drive growth when its restructuring has already produced real cost savings. Fellow Fool Michael Lewis points out that the company now anticipates another $100 million in annual revenue by 2014 -- not quite enough to push it over 30% cumulative revenue growth for another passing grade, but good enough to get back into positive territory.

Typically, when the chairman of a company dies, its shares drop. That hasn’t been the case for Valhi (VHI), Kronos Worldwide (KRO) and NL Industries (NL), which have all advanced today after Harold Simmons passed away.

  • [By John Udovich]

Dallas billionaire Harold Simmons died over the weekend with investors sending shares of some of his publically traded companies like Valhi, Inc (NYSE: VHI), Kronos Worldwide, Inc (NYSE: KRO), NL Industries, Inc (NYSE: NL) andCompX International Inc (NYSEMKT: CIX)to higher levels as they anticipate changessuch as asset sales or spin offs. Harold Simmons was the embodiment of the American dream because he was born during the depths of the Great Depression in Golden, Texas to schoolteacher parents and he spenthis early years living without indoor plumbing or electricity. However and by recognizingunderpriced assets and through the use of massive amounts of leverage (e.g. junk bonds),he built an empire andranked #40 on the 2013 Forbes 400 with a fortune estimated to be worth some $10 billion.

Hot Life Sciences Companies To Buy For 2014: Silver Wheaton Corp(SLW)

Silver Wheaton Corp., together with its subsidiaries, operates as a silver streaming company worldwide. The company has 14 long-term silver purchase agreements and 2 long-term precious metal purchase agreements whereby it acquires silver and gold production from the counterparties located in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Greece, Sweden, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Portugal. Silver Wheaton Corp. is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Doug Ehrman]

    How to play gold
Owning shares of GLD is a solid way to gain exposure to gold and avoid some of the stock-specific risks associated with owning stocks such as Goldcorp. Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) holds the appeal of being the largest gold miner on the planet, but it carries the same risks as Goldcorp. Despite the company's promise to tighten its belt, it faces the same pressures -- rising production costs and environmental concerns. If gold runs, silver is likely to follow suit. Thus, the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) will probably move as well. The industrial nature of silver may make it more appealing in the near term while you wait for Fed policy to change. Likewise, Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) is a great way to get exposure to precious metals. The silver streaming company buys the output of other miners at a set cost, meaning it, too, is insulated from production cost concerns. The company has thus been able to simultaneously achieve an operating margin above 70% and still boast the largest silver reserve on Earth, at more than 1 billion ounces.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

The suspension necessitated that it renegotiate the contract it has with Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) , which was anticipating taking 25% of the silver streams from Pascua-Lama. Because Barrick was contractually required to have 75% of the construction completed by the end of 2015, something that obviously wasn't going to happen, the silver streamer could have demanded back the upfront payments it gave the miner, minus credits for silver already received from three South American mines where it had been getting 100% of their streams and which was scheduled to end this year. As of the end of September, the payback figure stood at $371 million.

  • [By Doug Ehrman]

One company that should be included in silver investing for beginners is Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) . Unlike the previously mentioned miners, Silver Wheaton is a silver streaming company. it buys the production of other miners at a set, pre-determined price, so it's largely insulated from many of the risks that silver miners must address. As a result of its existing contracts, Silver Wheaton currently claims the largest reserve of silver in the world, at more than 1 billion ounces. The company is able to maintain an operating margin in excess of 70% and has strong longer-term prospects for those taking a multiyear view.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Gold investors weren't the only ones having a rough year. Other commodities such as silver and copper have been sinking this year as well, sending top stocks such as Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) and Freeport McMoRan (NYSE: FCX  ) down by double digits. Again, looking at the chart, you can see a pretty big correlation between falling commodity prices and the subsequent fall in the price of each stock.
