Top 10 Cheap Stocks To Invest In Right Now

USD/JPY rallied to its highest levels since September 11, after Japan's Finance Minister Taro Aso said it was important to keep foreign exchange intervention as a policy option.

Speaking in parliament on Thursday, Aso said "Japan must have tools to counter speculative moves in the currency market."

Aso's remarks emphasized the Japanese government's commitment to stimulate the economy with a weaker yen. Concerns over the health of the Japanese economy heightened after annualized GDP growth slowed in the third quarter.

While the yen softened after Aso remarks, Japanese shares rallied, with the Nikkei 225 (NKY) Stock Average closing at its highest level since May. Depreciation of the yen aids Japanese exporters, making their products cheaper in foreign markets.

Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) has only been on the Dow in its present form since 2009, but it first joined in 1997, only to be replaced by the megabank that acquired it at the turn of the century. Now that it's independent again, the New York City-based insurer has reclaimed a history that stretches further back than JPMorgan's to a $0.02 transaction in Hartford, Conn. Travelers has held up well through the devastation of the financial crisis, but will its pedigree be enough to fend off JPMorgan?

To be fair, your typical McDonald's or Yum! Brands believes they're kid-friendly, in the sense that a kid can get a variety of burgers, fried chicken, Mexican food, or pizza. And, the box most kid-meals come in are covered with puzzles and games that could technically qualify as "entertainment." Some McDonald's and Wendys Co. (NASDAQ:WEN) restaurants even have a jungle-gym to climb on. That's not the choice and entertainment parents are talking about, however, particularly on the menu front, but also on the entertainment front.

You know, were it just Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE) or just Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG) or just Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ) making a decided bullish move, I might be able to dismiss it. Similarly, if URZ had only been moving higher for one or two days (or only URG or only URRE), it might be easy to not be impressed. Neither of those situations has been the actual case, however. All three stocks have been moving upward for several days now, quite a bit, on noticeably higher volume. There's something "going on", as it were, and if prior group-wide movements are any clue, it's the kind of move worth tapping into.

Actually, there are several companies on these lists that qualified for either or both of my favorites lists. For example, Aflac (AFL) and or Emerson Electric (EMR) could easily be on both lists. My point is that I feel the reader should give the same consideration to each of these names as they would the two top 10 lists. To be clear, selecting the top 10 was difficult and therefore to a great extent subjective on my part. My method was to simply run a F.A.S.T. Graphson each Dividend Champion with above-average total return calculations. Then my lists were created by picking and choosing those companies that from my review looked best based on value, earnings and safety.

The stock is trading at a 49.9% premium to its calculated fair value of $71.45. GD did not earn any Stars in this section. A Star was earned since the Free Cash Flow payout ratio was less than 60% and there were no negative Free Cash Flows over the last 10 years. The stock earned a Star as a result of its most recent Debt to Total Capital being less than 45%. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1979 and has increased its dividend payments for 23 consecutive years. Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA) or Treasury bond? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA (20-year Treasury bond). Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description: 1. NPV MMA Diff. 2. We can glean a few clear trends from these share buybackers:

The majority of these plans are simply new plans to replace old plans that have now been completed, meaning these companies buy back their shares on a regular basis. Many of these stocks are valued right near the market multiple of 15 to 16 times projected earnings. Many of these stocks offer up a decent dividend as well, boosting their total cash return to shareholders. Most of these buyback programs represent a meaningful amount of the current share count. (Both VMWare's (NYSE: VMW) and Emerson Electric's (NYSE: EMR) buyback programs are not really meaningful as they are only likely large enough to offset stock option grants). Most of these stocks are near their 52-week highs, extending the theme of the current era that companies no longer wait for their stock to fall out of bed before buying back stock. Nor do any of these stocks trade below tangible book value, which also had historically served as a key litmus test of buyback efficacy.

Still, the longer-term buyback programs for some of these firms have surely been impressive. Take toy maker Hasbro (NYSE: HAS) as an example. The company's new $500 million share buyback (which would reduce the share count by 11% at current prices) is reasonably impressive -- until you look at what Hasbro has already been doing for nearly a decade.

Of course, animal health is also a key market for Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) . It announced last week that marketing authorization has been granted by the European Commission for the veterinary medicinal product, Bravecto. This is positive news for Merck, since Bravecto is the first and only treatment that has been shown to quickly and effectively kill fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks in a single dose.

Deutsche Bank announced on Wednesday that it has initiated coverage on Whole Foods Market (WFM).

Deutshe Bank assigned the natural foods supermarket’s a “Buy” rating, with a price target of $70.00. Analyst Karen Short noted, “WFM is the leading retailer in the high-growth natural/organic grocery industry. Aside from its dominance, WFM is taking share (and should continue to do so) because it is a best-in-class retailer with limited credible competition and as WFM continues to narrow the price gap through targeted priceinvestments, we believe share gains will accelerate. Concurrent with share gains, ROIC has significantly improved and should continue to do so. Given the strong correlation between ROIC trends and the share price, we expect WFM shares to move higher, along with ROIC.”

Whole Foods shares fell 0.29% during Wednesday’s session. Year-to-date, the stock is up 27.32%.

It seems a social media buzz is brewing in the beer industry. Our roving reporter Rex Moore visited the recent Craft Brewers Conference and spoke with some folks who should know, including the director of Whole Foods' (NASDAQ: WFM  ) social media efforts.

  • [By Nicholas Ward]

I bought shares of Whole Foods Market (WFM) on February 14, 2013 after the company experienced a 10.13% drop in share price. WFM carries the high P/E multiple of a growth stock: 32.6x. I wouldn't typically want to own a stock trading at such a high multiple but I do believe that Whole Foods' thinking and business plan is revolutionary and ahead of the curve. I also really respect the company's CEO, John Mackey, for his philosophy concerning free market economics and how a business should be run. Mr. Mackey isn't as concerned with shareholder return as he is with customer satisfaction and ultimately, company strength and performance. Because of this WFM pays a slight dividend: 0.92%. WFM isn't know for dividend growth (in fact, the company has cut its dividend in recent years); however, multiples aside, I think this company is undervalued at its current price range.
