Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] nflation growth: Dun & Bradstreet (DNB)

路 Inflation plus population growth: CEC Entertainment (CEC)

路 Nominal GDP Growth: Village Supermarket (VLGEA)

Over the last 10 years population growth, inflation, and real output per person growth has been so low it hard to tell the difference between companies growing at the rate of inflation, along with the population, or along with the economy.

You have to squint really hard to see any difference in the revenue growth records of DNB, Chuck E. Cheese, and Village.

This will not be true in all countries and at all times.

A literally no growth company like Earthlink is actually shrinking. It just happens to look like it staying perfectly flat because inflation is hiding the company real decay rate. In real terms, the company has been shrinking by about 3% a year for the last 10 years. So, Earthlink is not a no growth company. It shrinking.

That a bad sign. And, frankly, I don know how to value Earthlink. You would need to evaluate it as a turnaround or something not as a business that simplly stuck in place. I don know how to do that.

So, Earhtlink goes into the oo hardpile.

Dun & Bradstreet and CEC Entertainment are actual no growth businesses. This is hidden by their constant share buy backs. So, if you look at their earnings per share growth they look kind of like Peter Lynch idea of a low growthcompany or even a talwart They aren. Theye no growth businesses.

The same is pretty much true with Village Supermarket. Although this is complicated. The nature of their business high volume, low cost groceries means they can appear to be a no growth business when they are actually just keeping prices down and increasing volume. You would need to check their sales numbers more carefully. Grocery stores often discuss inflation in their annual reports. Village Supermarket always does t

Stocks ended a mini-losing streak on Friday, led by upbeat news from Intel (INTC). The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) rose 41 points, after sliding more than 200 over the previous two days. The Nasdaq composite (^IXIC) gained 13 and the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC) added 6 points. Those modest gains did little to trim the loss for the week. The major averages posted their biggest weekly declines in more than two months. But Apple (AAPL) lost more than 1 percent. The stock is down since its 7-for-1 stock split took effect on Monday. There were two other big stories that had some legs beyond the companies directly involved. Open Table (OPEN) agreed to be acquired by Priceline (PCLN) for $2.6 billion. Open Table, which provides restaurant reservations, jumped 48 percent. Other online service providers rode the coattails of that deal. Yelp (YELP) gained 14 percent and Groupon (GRPN) gained 4 percent. In the retail arena, Express (EXPR) jumped 21 percent after a private equity firm took a 9.9 percent stake in the teen retailer and indicated it may make a buyout offer. That gave a boost to Aeropostale (ARO) and American Eagle (AEO), which both rose more than 2 percent. Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) gained 1½. Elsewhere, International Game Technology (IGT) gained 10½ percent on a Reuters report that a bidding war could erupt for

Although the sentiment has been running ahead of real sector data, slight positive growth has replaced the recent contraction. Next Wednesday, the ECB is expected to unveil the broad details of the Asset Quality Review (AQR). This is not a stress test. It is a preliminary review of the books of the banks for which it will soon have supervisory responsibilities. Definitions of risk-weighted assets various in the euro area and some uniformity is a necessary condition of a banking union. New stress tests will be conducted next year.
